MHA #6, Wednesday Afternoon

They hadn't gotten home until almost dawn yesterday morning, trying to plan for the Covenant and what they could do to keep Baltimore safe from them. And Verity, more dispirited than she was willing to let on, had just fallen facefirst into their--her bed the moment they'd gotten into the bedroom, barely taking the time to kick off her shoes and remove her holster.

Even now, it was afternoon and she was struggling against waking up. Liam was a warm presence beside her, offering comfort just by being there. What would she be doing now if she didn't have him, she wondered? Trying to bring people together all by herself? No one to hold her when it all got to be a bit too much? It was bad enough those rare nights he went back to his place and she didn't follow along; imagining not having him at all was...awful.

Without saying anything, she rolled over on her side and wrapped her arms around him, burying her face in his side.

"Yes, this is exactly the kind of thing I wanna be precise about?" Verity snickered.

"Whatever butters your muffin, I guess."

Verity waggled her eyebrows at him. "Y'wanna know what really butters my muffin?" she asked.

"Mmmm, I'm all ears," Liam replied, leaning over to give her a quick kiss.

[arboreal_priestess]

"Not. Putting. Jam. On. Muffins!" she hissed, then rocked backwards, still laughing.

[firstofitskind]

"You are a terrible person and I am seriously rethinking," a pause, for dramatic effect. "... That offer to make you coffee."

[arboreal_priestess]

Verity stopped laughing and sat straight up in bed. "You wouldn't dare."

"Just try me." Liam smirked up at her, tucking his hands behind his head.

[arboreal_priestess]

Verity turned an expression of absolute betrayal upon him. "You are diabolical," she declared. "Completely so."

[firstofitskind]

"You're terrible and I'm diabolical," Liam pointed out. "Seems to me that's a pretty good match."

[arboreal_priestess]

"Maybe that's why we work out so well," Verity agreed, rolling over to kiss him this time. "...Though if you take back your coffee offer, I'm letting the mice into the bathroom the next time you shower."

"You wouldn't." Liam loved the mice, he really did.

He did not love listening to them recite liturgy while he was in the shower.

Could be worse. They could decide to take that shower as the basis of new liturgy.

"You're holding my coffee hostage and you wanna ask me that?" Verity challenged.

"I didn't say I'd prevent you from making it, just that I wasn't gonna."

(He was absolutely still going to make her coffee. Shh.)

"But your coffee tastes better," Verity sulked.

It was a magic blend of 'someone else doing it' and 'that someone actually worrying about proportions.'

"That's because I actually measure instead of just chucking a bunch of spoonfuls of coffee grounds into the filter," Liam pointed out.

[arboreal_priestess]

"Coffee, good," Verity explained. "Ergo, more coffee, better!"

That was...not how it worked.

[firstofitskind]

"I don't even like the stuff and I know that's not how it works," Liam retorted.

[arboreal_priestess]

"Well, if you're so smart, why don't you go make me some coffee to show me how it's done, I guess," Verity said.

...With no ulterior motives at all.

"I'll consider it, if you ask nicely." Ignoring the fact that he'd offered in the first place.

[arboreal_priestess]

"Pretty please with sugar on top?" Verity asked.

Which, coincidentally, was also how she liked her coffee!

[firstofitskind]

"Hmmm, fine," Liam said, moving to divest himself of the blankets. "You coming with or am I also providing bedside delivery?"

[arboreal_priestess]

"Oh fine," Verity huffed, for once not needing to feel around the floor for a shirt to pull on. "I suppose I can go with you."

Which was entirely for his benefit and not at all because she didn't want to be far away from him this morning, thank you.

"How very big of you," Liam laughed, his tone wry.

Truth be told, he was feeling much the same. Maybe it was the Sight, maybe it was just a touch of good old human intuition, but something was telling him that with the Covenant threat looming on the horizon, this might well be the last bit of (relative) peace they were going to get for a while.

"I'm a pretty big person all told," Verity agreed, from her lofty height of five foot two inches tall.
