arboreal_priestess: Yvonne Strahovski as Verity Alice Price (Through The Looking Glass)
Verity woke up to the distant sounds of cheering. She smiled slightly, eyes closing again...and then remembered abruptly where she was. Her room was quiet, even the beeping machines were dark and pushed to the corners and she was no longer attached by tubes and wires to them. She waited a few minutes to be sure that no one was going to come barging in before she stretched slowly and folded back the covers, finally moving into a full sitting position. She was wearing one of those pale green hospital gowns. It was almost a relief to realize that those were just as much standard issue in cryptid hospitals as they were in human ones. Verity took a breath, steeling herself, and pulled the gown up to get a look at her stomach where Peter had shot her.

The gunshot wound was gone, and while the skin there was slightly paler than the skin around it, there was no scar. She touched it lightly with the tips of her fingers, feeling the first tears wet her cheeks. She was going to be okay. She was going to be better than okay, in fact. And that meant that whatever came next, it was going to be something that she needed to deal with. )
[AND WE'RE DONE! The last bit of text, adapted and mutilated from Midnight Blue-Light Special by Seanan McGuire. Thanks so much to [personal profile] firstofitskind for a) all the preplaying, b) all the coding, and c) her endless patience with getting this done. <3 <3 <3 Could have technically? maybe? done this without you, bb, but nowhere near as well or stylishly.]

The dragon from the night before was no longer in the ticket booth. She had been replaced by a more familiar, less friendly face: Istas, who was sitting calmly behind the glass, stitching another layer of lace onto the edge of her parasol as she waited for a paying customer to demand her attention. Verity rapped on the edge of the booth. She lifted her head and frowned, eyes narrowing.

Why are you on the ground? )

"So this is what the street-level entrance looks like these days," Verity said, as she and Liam rounded the exited the alleyway onto the main street. After a night of strategizing about how to handle the oncoming purge, the three of them had broke around dawn for some much-needed sleep, agreeing to meet up again that evening to start warning other folks. The Freakshow was a pretty good place to start, though that meant making a few necessary concessions.

Ryan might be willing to let Dominic in by himself every so often, but two nights in a row was pushing it. For Dominic to get in without much trouble, Liam and Verity needed to be with him. And Dominic's aversion to running across rooftops meant that they needed to meet him on the sidewalk below as he approached the front door on foot.

The front entrance was painted to look like the mouth of a tent )

"Ryan, I require something so horrifically alcoholic that it makes livers tremble with fear and run for their lives when its name is uttered," Verity said solemnly, sidling up to the bar at the Freakshow. "To celebrate leaving for Iceland tomorrow with Liam." Their departure had been delayed first by the manananggal and then by her recovering from being poisoned by said manananggal, but she was feeling better than ever tonight and they'd already scheduled the portal to head out first thing in the morning.

Ryan raised an eyebrow. "Oooh, a vacation! So, I could make you that, oooor I could get you a martini glass filled with club soda and garnished with something that makes it look like you’re actually drinking liquor for a change. So Liam doesn't have to maneuver a hungover Verity Price through customs."

Verity grinned. "That sounds good. Let's do that."

"Why am I not surprised?" asked Ryan - but he was laughing as he said it, and he kept laughing as he moved to get Verity her drink. "You look a little tired. Have the mice been letting you sleep?"

"I think letting me sleep is against their religion."

"You are their religion."

"And in their cosmology, the gods have no need for silly little things like 'sufficient rest.'" Verity picked up the club soda Ryan set in front of her; tonight's garnish involved a lemon wedge, a chunk of mango, and yes, a little paper umbrella. "Seriously, though, manananggal poisoning is no joke."

Ryan started to answer her, but stopped himself before the first word could form. Straightening to his full height, he fixed his eyes on a point just behind Verity in the crowd, all but glowering. 'You have company.' )

The dragon's eyes were a luminous pumpkin orange, like giant jack-o-lanterns burning in the face of the largest lizard the world had ever seen. He was still mostly prone, but his head was raised like the head of a snake getting ready to strike. The few remaining cultists cheered, apparently thinking he'd finally woken up at their command, and would now be happy to do their bidding. Verity wasn't completely sure they were wrong. )

Tooth fairy dust was meant to be administered to sleeping children to make sure they stay asleep while the Tooth Fairy fed. (The specific dietary needs of Tooth Fairies were irrelevant and a little bit disgusting and really not what Verity needed to be thinking about right now.) The standard dose, according to Grandpa Thomas’ Field Guide to Pixies, Sprites, and Other Household Pests, was a small pinch. A small pinch, as measured against the hand of something a little bit bigger than a Barbie doll. Dave had blown two full handfuls on them. At that kind of dosage, it was no wonder that when Verity finally stumbled back toward consciousness, she felt like she'd been shot full of curare, chloroform, and cockatrice venom. )

arboreal_priestess: Yvonne Strahovski as Verity Alice Price (Windblown But Professional)
With Piyusha dead, there was one last avenue Verity knew she could go to for good information: Dave. Bogeymen collected information the way dragon princesses hoarded gold and were just as cutthroat about parting with it. But Verity had her own information to trade--and other options as well if Dave decided he didn't want to play nice. )

arboreal_priestess: Yvonne Strahovski as Verity Alice Price (I Don't Like The Look Of This)
Fireworks for the Fourth lit up the night sky, but neither Verity nor Liam were in a mood to celebrate. "Well, this is going to be a whole lot of not fun," Verity sighed, standing outside of Dave's Fish and Strips, an unimposing building that was surprisingly hard to find unless you knew exactly where to look for it. It was a 'gentleman's club' that included live dancers who got down to absolutely nothing on the front stage. That didn't make it special; any city of size included at least a few of the same kinds of places. But Dave's was the only one that Verity knew of (in Baltimore anyway), that catered specifically to the cryptid set. Both the staff and the patrons were majority cryptid, if not exclusively so.

But hey, everybody had to make a living. In another life, Verity could easily see herself waitressing here. Just waitressing--she hadn't been kidding about her grandma's reaction. )
