The Beach, Saturday Afternoon

Verity was having an absolutely delightful time watching Dominic react to the island. He'd heard of Aeslin mice, of course, though he had not been prepared for the reality of them (no one was prepared for the reality of them). The radio squirrels, the teal dear, and the alot of towels they'd run into on their ramble through the preserve had absolutely floored him.

Now the three of them were spread out on a blanket for a picnic on the beach, so Dominic could continue to people watch. There was Liam's weird space chess set up so they could play and Verity could snark, and the weather was pretty enough to make it just a nice, surprisingly relaxing day.

"Water's probably a bit too cold to go swimming," Liam mused. A little sadly because Verity and Dominic in nothing but swimwear would be a pretty sight.

Never you mind that he'd also seen both of them wearing nothing at all, that was hardly the point.

"I've done it," Verity and Dominic said in unison. They both paused and grinned at each other before Verity continued. "But other than training and emergencies, I'm definitely not about to hop into the Atlantic in December."

Liam laughed, shaking his head fondly at the two of them because of course they’d done that.

“You say that, but clearly you’ve never been to a beach in Uruguay in the winter.”

"Pfft," Verity snorted. "That barely counts as the same ocean. And definitely doesn't count considering it's past the equator."

"You never specified winter, only December," Dominic pointed out smugly. "And you," he turned to Liam, "made a mistake in doing so."

"When you're right, you're right," Liam conceded.

Winter on a beach in Uruguay would still be pretty chilly, though not freezing. December on the other hand...

"Pedants," Verity announced, flopping over backwards. "Dear god, I'm surrounded by pedants. Save me."

“You didn’t have any complaints last night,” Liam countered with a smirk.

“The way I remember it, you rather enjoyed being surrounded by the both of us,” Dominic agreed.

Okay, Verity have a happy little shiver at that. "Excuse you," she smirked. "If I remember my anatomy correctly, I was surrounding both of you."

At least for that iteration of the evening.

"And now who is being the pedant, hmm?" Dominic teased.

"And a brat," Liam declared, shaking his head. "Maybe I will only share these apple tarts with Dominic," he declared haughtily, pulling two out of the basket.

A blatant lie, of course. Except for the brat part.

"So you didn't want to be reminded of being that deep in me?" Verity asked, raising her eyebrows. "Shame. I was gonna segue that into a suggestion we do it again."

"What, here?" Liam squawked.

He had remarkably few sexual hangups, it was true, but 'sex on the beach' was apparently one of them.

"While I'm all for a repeat performance, I'm going to throw my vote in for someplace where we won't be getting sand in uncomfortable places."

Not that he seriously thought Verity's suggestion had been meant to be done immediately.

Verity was just going to roll her eyes.

And try to steal a tart.

No not here, silly fiance.

"Just checking," Liam said, making a show of holding said tart up out of Verity's reach.

"No fair making fun of me because I'm short," Verity sulked. She nudged Dominic. "Are you gonna let him do that?"

Dominic thought about it for a second. Considered saying 'Yes, because it's funny'. Instead, went with: "I'll distract him, you grab the pastry."

"Distract me h-"

Oh.

Like that.

Okay then.

And there, Verity nearly got distracted herself with all the pretty going on. "Mmm," she said, snatching that pastry. "I do so appreciate Dominic's newfound preference for teamwork."

"Devious, is what it is," Liam tried to grumble as he pulled away.

Tried being the operative word.

And Verity was there, her weight pressing him forward as she leaned against him and purred in his ear, "Just how you like it."

And really, there was no denying how much he liked it, not with both of them on either side of him like that.

"What is that saying?" Dominic wondered. "'Teamwork makes the dream work'?"

Dominic. Dominic no. Why were you like this?

"Boo!" Verity crumpled up a napkin and tossed it at Dominic. "Look, you murdered the mood."

"No more desserts for you," Liam declared haughtily.

[hardchoicesindarkplaces]

"Disappointing," Dominic tsked. "But I suppose I shall have to indulge in other ways, instead," he added, a slow smile appearing on his face.

"And when I said something like that, everyone immediately started complaining about sex on beaches," Verity sniffed, her hand going to rest on Dominic's thigh.
