A Club in Baltimore, Monday Night

Between snake cults, dragons, and now singing fish going evil for a lack of participation trophies, it had been awhile since Verity and Liam had had anything resembling a real date. So Verity had skipped out on her shift at the Devil's Nest and headed out to the mainland with him, dressed to kill (both literally and metaphorically), and looking for a good time.

The club they'd ended up at was a lot smaller and quieter, one where they could have dinner the second floor up and actually hear themselves talk. "Oooh, good call," she said as they were led to their table. "Dinner and dancing. It's like you know how to show me a good time."

"We can have a conversation that I don't have to bribe anybody not to turn into Holy Writ the great-grandchildren will hear," Verity said with a grin. "This is thrilling."

Beat.

"Oh god, is this what parents feel like?"

“At least you didn’t have to worry about finding a sitter?” Liam pointed out.

[arboreal_priestess]

"But I'm looking at the same odds of going back and finding the house trashed," Verity said. "So...more like having teenagers, I guess."

And on that note, she was going to be ordering wine with dinner. Just decided.

“... Now I’m picturing them throwing a party and inviting all the other creatures that live on the island,” Liam admitted.

What would Verity’s apartment look like after an alot of beer or something wandered through?

Like Liam was getting a new roommate, that's what.

"Don't you ever breathe that idea anywhere near where they can hear you," Verity hissed, instinctively looking down as if she might see a dozen furry faces with their velvety ears perked. "Or I'll start introducing you to my knives."

“... Don’t worry, I have no interest in being anything more than a passing acquaintance to your knives,” Liam assured her. “My lips are sealed.”

Oh, he was probably going to get introduced to them anyway. Verity was proud of her knives.

"Good," Verity said. "Also, I'd make sure that you were the officer sent to bust up the party."

Go on, Liam. Tell the mice their bacchanal was disturbing the peace and they'd have to stop.

Yes, but there was being introduced and then there was being introduced.

"And here I thought you liked me," Liam said, shaking his head.

[arboreal_priestess]

"Mmm, not if you're giving my mice ideas," Verity said firmly. "Then all bets are off. Not even your cute butt could save you then."

...Possibly.

"Well, for the record, I would never encourage your mice to throw a rager," Liam said solemnly.

[arboreal_priestess]

"That's exactly what Antimony would say, right before making our cousin Artie encourage my mice to throw a rager," Verity said.

"And exactly how much am I like either your sister or your cousin?" Liam asked pointedly.

[arboreal_priestess]

"Very little," Verity said, with a wicked smile. "For one thing, if you decided to tie me up, I'd probably enjoy it."

Well now, that was an interesting mental image. Don't mind Liam as he let himself get momentarily distracted by it.

"'Probably', hm?" he said with a smirk. "Maybe we ought to find out."

"The real question is, can you distract me long enough to prevent me from getting back out again?" Verity asked, her foot sliding along the inside if his leg under their table.

Liam drew a sharp breath at the feeling of her foot against his leg. "I can be very... distracting," he said confidently.

[arboreal_priestess]

"Mmm, that's true," Verity said, eyes hooded. She wasn't going to deny that, not when she had multiple lovely memories of just how very distracting he could be. "But I can be pretty focused..."

[firstofitskind]

"I'll just have to make sure to give you something worth focusing on, then," Liam said, reaching over to trace his fingers along the line of her jaw.

Verity shivered, her eyes sliding closed to better appreciate the play of his fingers over her skin. "You usually do," she murmured.

"So," Liam said thoughtfully, as an idea came to mind "when you said 'possibly not until tomorrow' were you thinking just that we would stay out dancing until last call, or..." he trailed off.

"Definitely 'or,'" Verity assured him. "I mean, 'and' also works, but I was firmly thinking of that 'or.'"

[firstofitskind]

"I could do 'and'," Liam said agreeably. "But yes. Sarah's hotel isn't the only nice place around here. I bet we could even find one with one of those jacuzzi tubs..."

"Liam Kincaid!" Verity said, adopting a shocked expression. "Are you trying to seduce me?"

“Would I do something like that?” Liam asked, adopting his very best innocent expression .

He absolutely would.

[arboreal_priestess]

"Well, if you're not, we're going to have to have a serious discussion about the expectations for our relationship," Verity said with a laugh, tracing her finger over the rim of her water glass. "Cause you'd better be."
