MHA #6, Wednesday Afternoon

They hadn't gotten home until almost dawn yesterday morning, trying to plan for the Covenant and what they could do to keep Baltimore safe from them. And Verity, more dispirited than she was willing to let on, had just fallen facefirst into their--her bed the moment they'd gotten into the bedroom, barely taking the time to kick off her shoes and remove her holster.

Even now, it was afternoon and she was struggling against waking up. Liam was a warm presence beside her, offering comfort just by being there. What would she be doing now if she didn't have him, she wondered? Trying to bring people together all by herself? No one to hold her when it all got to be a bit too much? It was bad enough those rare nights he went back to his place and she didn't follow along; imagining not having him at all was...awful.

Without saying anything, she rolled over on her side and wrapped her arms around him, burying her face in his side.

"Yep," Liam confirmed. "Gonna make a fortune on the secondary market."

Look at this detailing, like the weird dent in the seat and how three of the four legs were different heights! Obviously it was.

"I'm gonna turn on Antiques Roadshow and there you'll be, hawking the couch that comfort forgot."

"I promise I won't use the fortune I make selling your shitty furniture to buy us scary, probably demon-infested furniture, though." Liam told her.

Plenty of things in that Ikea had been perfectly normal. But then there were the things that had definitely not been normal.

"Good," Verity sniffed. "This house has standards, you know? If we get eaten by our own furniture, my family will never let me live it down."

"You?" Liam scoffed. "They'll never let me live it down."

"Antimony will be so disappointed in you," Verity said, shaking her head. "Me, she thinks I've got about as much air in my head as a balloon, but you, she expects better of."

"How did that even happen?" Liam said wonderingly, as he moved to begin puttering around the kitchen to assemble something breakfast-like. Yes, it was mid afternoon, but they'd just woken up. All-day breakfast was a thing, just ask literally any fast food establishment these days.

"Maybe you're just catnip for Price girls," Verity said, leaning in to kiss his shoulder. "Maybe even Price boys, too. I never asked Alex if he played for more than one team."

"Think that's why he keeps trying to get me to camping?" Liam mused.

"Not on your life," Verity said, laughing. "Or, rather, not on his. I don't share well." She paused, considering. "Not with my siblings anyway."

"There's only one Price I'm interested in, anyway," Liam confirmed with a chuckle of his own. Alex wasn't hard on the eyes at all, but not his type.

There was only room for one nerd in this relationship and that was Liam, thanks much.

"So then what is your Price?" Verity asked.

"Blonde, fabulous dancer, legs up to here- though all told, she's not all that tall, wicked sense of humour... ringing any bells?"

"Hey!" Verity protested. "I'm...umm..."

Really not that tall.

"Kinda short, babe," Liam said fondly. "Sorry to burst your bubble."

She pouted up at him from roughly a foot below his face. "It's cause all the awesome is concentrated," she declared.

"Whatever helps you sleep at night," Liam said, reaching out to pat her gently on the top of her head. A dangerous maneuver, but he was willing to take the risk.

Verity was limited in her responses because most of the tactics she'd use were meant to hurt and debilitate the other person. Instead she just glowered and bared her teeth. "I'm replacing all your tea leaves with coffee grounds," she threatened.

“Now that’s just cruel and unusual,” Liam said with an exaggerated pout.

"And yet completely warranted," Verity sniffed. "Mr. I-Am-So-Special-Because-I-Can-Reach-The-Top-Shelves."

“Maybe that’s where I’ll start putting my tea, if you’re going to threaten to mess with it,” Liam retorted.

"You think I'm too proud to climb up onto the counters to mess with you?" Verity asked, hands on her hips.

“No,” Liam had to admit grudgingly. “I suppose you wouldn’t be.” And then, without missing a beat: “One egg or two?” as he headed for the fridge.

"Two," Verity said immediately, hopping up onto the counter to watch him cook. "Plotting against the Covenant is hungry work."

Bacon, eggs, and toast: nothing fancy, but plenty of protein and carbohydrates. Bacon went into the pan first, and he sighed as he prodded it with the spatula. “Someone needs to talk to them about their sense of timing,” he griped, mostly because pointless griping was about all they could do now, at least until that other show dropped.
